What is a Dimmer and Light Switch Combination?
Light Switches and Dimmer Switches are generally available to switch 1 way and/or 2 way circuits. All of our Light Switches and Dimmers are 2 way versions and the beauty of this is that they can be used on both 1 way and 2 way circuits thus eliminating the need to buy both types. A 2 way circuit refers to a lighting point that can be switched from 2 different places i.e. Hall and Landing, where you might have a switch at the bottom of the stairs and a further switch at the top of the stairs that both control the same lighting point.
If you should have more than 2 switching positions you will require one of the switches to be an intermediate switch.
Our intelligent Dimmer range takes some of the mystery out of choosing the correct dimmer. These leading edge intelligent dimmers will adapt to the type of load put through them. This means that they will operate standard incandescent lamps as well as mains halogen lamps and low voltage halogen lamps. If you require LED lamps to be dimmed please refer to our LED Dimmer section below– these can be supplied in combination with Light Switches by request.
Our light switches and dimmer combinations are available from a double switch (Two Gang) up to 3 switches (Three Gang). The word “gang” refers to the rocker switch or dimmer– for example if you require a triple light switch it would be 3 Gang.
Larger versions of this combination range are available by request.
Our light switches have a load rating of either 10amp or 20amp and the terminals will accept up to 3 x 1.5mm Twin & Earth Cables on both the switches and the dimmers.
Our Dimmer Switches are rated by wattage. They are commonly available in 250w, 400w, 600w and 1000w modules. It is important to note that they also have a minimum load requirement of 25w, 40w, 100w and 150w respectively.
Led Dimmers
Our LED Dimmers are specifically designed to operate on ALL types of DIMMABLE LED lamps and strips. These trailing edge dimmers can be easily set to run on leading edge mode by following the instructions provided with this product. This versatility means that these LED dimmers can almost dim anything from ordinary incandescent light bulbs through to halogen bulbs as well as LED.
Non-dimmable LED lamps cannot be dimmed. Should you fit a dimmer to non-dimmable LED’s then damage to the dimmer, lamps or both will occur.
Mains voltage dimmable LED light bulbs can be dimmed using an ordinary resistive dimmer. LED lamps are an attractive proposition as they consume very low wattages and are very energy efficient. This can cause problems when choosing the correct dimmer.
If you have a few LED lamps to dim, then the total wattage will not be enough to load the dimmer. For example, four 5w LED lamps in a small room will only total 20w whilst the minimum load on a 250w dimmer is 25w. This means that the dimmer will simply not work. In these circumstances a low load dimmer rated at 5 – 50w would be required.
Under normal circumstances, so long as the minimum load is exceeded, dimming mains voltage LED lamps is not an issue so long as the minimum load is observed.
Never mix lighting types through the same dimmer on the same circuit. For example if you have 3 halogen bulbs and 3 LED bulbs fitted in the same room on the same switch you cannot replace that switch with a dimmer unless you remove either the halogen lamps or the LEDs. If you were to fit a dimmer in these circumstances then damage to the dimmer, lamps or both will occur.
On special request we can make up combined dimmers that incorporate LED dimmers and intelligent dimmers on the same plate if required.
We recommend 25mm deep wall boxes for mounting our Dimmer and Light Switch Combinations or 35mm deep wall boxes for shallow or flat plate versions.
